Members of Parliament emphasized the need to strengthen laws and policies to ensure the availability of fresh vegetables and promote physical activity as a means to prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. NCDs currently account for 67% of all deaths in the country, with 22% being classified as premature. Without effective prevention measures, the nation’s overall progress could be significantly hindered.
These remarks were made during a discussion titled “Role of Law to Promote Physical Activity and Healthy Diet” held on Thursday, March 10, 2022, at the Parliament Members Club Hall of the National Parliament. The event was organized by the Center for Law and Policy Affairs (CLPA) and Dhaka International University, with support from the International Development Law Organization (IDLO). The session was chaired by Barrister Shamim Haider Patwary, MP, while the keynote address was delivered by Syed Mahbubul Alam Tahin, Secretary of CLPA.
