Public health experts and rights activists have called for strong and effective Front-of-Pack Labelling (FOPL) regulations to address the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and strengthen public health protection in Bangladesh.\"\"<\/p>\n

The call was made at a discussion held on Thursday (April 23) in Gulshan, Dhaka. The event, titled \u201cInternational Experiences and Way Forward for Developing Strong and Effective FOPL Regulations for Public Health Protection\u201d<\/em>, was jointly organized by the Centre for Law and Policy Affairs (CLPA), the Public Health Lawyers Network, and the Citizen Network.<\/p>\n

The meeting was chaired by Professor Dr.\u00a0 A F M Sarwar Speakers, \u00a0included representatives from the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority, BSTI, WHO, BUHS, State University, and several public health and development organizations.<\/p>\n

In the keynote presentation, Advocate Syed Mahbubul Alam Tahin noted that countries such as Chile and Canada have successfully reduced the consumption of unhealthy foods and encouraged product reformulation through mandatory warning-based FOPL systems, in line with WHO and FAO recommendations.<\/p>\n

Professor Dr. Mohammad Shoeb informed that the draft of the \u201cSafe Food (Packaged Food Labelling) Regulations, 2026\u201d has been prepared and is currently in the process of finalization.<\/p>\n

Speakers emphasized that FOPL is not merely a labelling tool but a vital public health policy. They stressed that science-based and mandatory implementation of FOPL could significantly improve population health and contribute to protecting future generations in Bangladesh.<\/p>\n

In this context, speakers urged the introduction of simple, visible, and warning-based nutritional information on the front of packaged food products. They also called for a strong regulatory framework including clear warning symbols, standardized font sizes, high-visibility colors, mandatory legal provisions, effective monitoring systems, and strict penalty enforcement to ensure compliance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
